Devils Postpile national monument.

On our honeymoon trip Mary and I stayed in the mammoth lakes area for 4 days. We boarded the horses at Sierra meadows ranch that is just on the edge of the city.

When we were in Bishop we purchased a new copy of the Mammoth Adventure map, this shows all detail and information you could ever ask for from streets, topographical information, to trails, including PCT/John Muhr.By the map!

The ranger station stops all cars that do not have a reservation and Minarate summit. All vehicles passing through have to pay a day use fee currently $12/day. Vehicles with horse trailers are allowed to pass with or without a reservation.

As you enter the monument and head down the steep grade into the valley.

The first camp site is Agnew meadows, There are 3 equestrian campsites. There are not corrals here, so be prepared to high tie your horses or bring portables. There are nice toilets, no showers, good water. There is a pack station at Agnew meadows that appears to be used by the management of redds meadows for packing north. Its possible to arrange to use their corrals.

The rest of the campsites through the valley have no horse camping.

The end of the road is redds meadows, This is the major store re supply for those hiking the John Muhr trail. There is also a Pack station with corrals. They can and will accommodate those who want to corral your horses there. You can also stay / camp there but No Tents.

The John Muhr trail and 99% of the trails are open to equestrian usage. Its rumored that the PCT and Muhr split at the postpile. I do not think horses are allowed on the PCT at the postpile. I think that the volume of people who go to see the Devils postpile we should just avoid this area no horseback..
