Mammoth lakes
On our honeymoon trip Mary and I stayed in the mammoth lakes
area for 4 days. We boarded the horses at Sierra meadows ranch that is just on
the edge of the city.
When we were in Bishop we purchased a new copy of the
Mammoth Adventure map, this shows all detail and information you could ever ask
for from streets, topographical information, to trails, including PCT/John Muhr. By the map!

There is some good riding directly out of the stables, but
within a few miles you can be at some of the most scenic riding possible, with
minimum difficulty
Here are some suggestions
- The
first day do something simple to help your horse
get acclimated to the altitude.
- Trails
directly from sierra meadows ranch or Sherwin creek road trailhead
- Near
mammoth lakes you could try these trailheads
- Horseshoe
lake * **
- 2 at
lake George
- Near
the pine city camp ground
- The
top of cold water campground
- Mill
city, down to Sherwin creek or across to twin lakes *
- Also
taking Mammoth scenic loop there are a number of places that in the winter
are used for snowmobiling and some mountain bike use in the summer.
- Inyo
crater, and lakes *
- Deer
mountain
- And
out towards Deadman camp grounds, Rumored to be free
camping on another map *
- There
is also a trail along the mammoth scienic loop
road that is nice and flat that could be one of the selections for the
first easy day ride, lots of trees
notes *(
I want to try this one) **Trailer parking area only
